About second harmonic generation in an acetic acid

About second harmonic generation in an acetic acid

We made an experiment showing that a second harmonic generation can happen not only in non-linear crystals but also in liquids.

We launched the laser on 99% power on a metal piece through the acetic acid.

The laser beam in unfocused (+-1-3 mm) [facal range is 80 mm]

The green flash happens ever 1-2 seconds.

For an experiment we used:

  • an old HDD disk
  • an acetic acid (9%)
  • a 10 watt Endurance DPSS laser module (Nd:YAG 1064 nm, 7-10 ns pulse width, Frequency: 25-30 kHz, laser beam spot 40 uM, TTL power: 99%)

For an effect detection we used:

A mirror Canon 60D camera with 15-85 lens (max zoom) + green filter

Ultra-fast snapshot.

Red flashes (1064 / 808 nm)
